Jan’s life newsletter

April 2026

Before I tell you about my life, I want to know what happened in your life. Send me a message on Facebook/WhatsApp/etc. or email me at post@jangebauer.eu.

Homeownership

Somehow, the flat is still some time away from being set up. So close yet so far. I am starting to think that homeownership is a scam, though I would have to do these things in an unfurnished, rented flat anyway.

Glasgow visit

It was delightful to see my friends again. My friend Tom, who lives in Aberdeen, was able to make it, so it was almost a complete uni reunion. Only Benji was missing. Otherwise Glasgow was rather nice. I think I prefer it to Edinburgh in many ways.

German course

In the second part of the winter and first half of spring, Dariya and I are attending a B2 German course. I am glad I get to confirm my level but two sessions per week is quite a lot. I don’t think I’ll visit such a course again.

Drop kick me, Jesus (through the goalposts of life)

There were two major developments in my life, actually. One is we got a new car. Nothing special, a used Opel Corsa EV. I was, and still am, about its ability to do road trips. But given the war in the Middle East, I feel smug about fuel prices. Though I should note that we don’t charge at home. The other development is that I am going to be a father to a boy! This one has been in the works for a few months now, so hopefully the scary stages are past us. I am very excited.

Plans

As the flat is a neverending project, this will always be on the list. This probably includes furniture for the baby. Otherwise, it’s to prepare for a B2 German exam in May.

Reading

I didn’t finish the book by Zuboff. It is very interesting but I read mostly before bed and that book made me think too much. I am currently reading Arc de Triomphe by Remarque and it’s pretty good. And also Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. I don’t know if I like that much. It’s a bit too mundane and disjointed. I also have “How to talk to your kids so they listen” on my phone. Curious book

What about you?

What happened in your life recently? What are your plans? Tell me!
